L' Equip Petit (The Little Team) shows what youth sports is really about

Posted on 08:32 by Unknown
L' Equip Petit (The Little Team) is a Spanish film which chronicles the season of Mangatania F.C. youth soccer team in the Catalonia region of Spain. The kids couldn't be more than five or six. You can tell by their size and the various numbers of missing front teeth. This film is told mostly from the kids' perspective, but don't let the cute factor fool you. They're teaching a very valuable lesson about sportsmanship and what youth sports is really about. The reason you see so many teeth throughout the film is because the kids are always smiling - but not because they're a winning team. Quite the opposite is true.

During the season depicted in the film, Mangatania did not score a goal for most of the campaign - let alone win a game. That didn't matter, though. The coaches and parents encouraged the kids regardless. In the film, watch the reaction of the adults when the kids almost score a goal. I'm giving away too much. Take about 10 minutes and watch the film below (email subscribers click here) and tell me what you think in the comment section. Also, pay attention to the quote from the young boy near the end. "We don't care if we don't score, because we have fun. We'll score when we grow old." He is certainly wise beyond his years. Until next time...

Shameless Self-Promotion, Part 2

Posted on 10:28 by Unknown
Sometimes people believe you're good at something because you say you are. Well, I'm pretty good at this writing bit, but radio is my first love. I only have a few minutes to write this piece so I have to be quick. I've been invited to join my friend Arlington Lane on his iWatch Radio program called N-The-Zone. As many of you know, I'm a huge wrestling and boxing nut and Arlington asked for my two cents. I think he'll get a dollar's worth today. Anyway, you can tune in starting at 1 p.m. CDT at http://www.iwatchradio.com/. Until next time...

Sportsmanship - Here, there, and everywhere

Posted on 09:02 by Unknown
Happy Monday everybody! Usually people say that because they don't like Mondays and want to get a negative response out of you. However, as the Sports Commission's resident contrarian - I happen to like Mondays. As a matter of fact, Monday is my favorite day of the week. Today may not be your favorite day of the week, but this week is chock full o' stuff in the life of the St. Louis Sports Commission and its Sportsmanship Initiative. I even have to separate this stuff by topic. So, pay attention to the headings.

Olympic Day
Our second Olympic Day with the Disabled Athlete Sports Association (DASA) was a tremendous success. The local media here in St. Louis even took notice. Click on the following link for our story in the Eureka-Wildwood Patch. The group shot is featured in this post and you can enjoy other pictures from Olympic Day 2011 in our photostream in the upper-right hand corner of this page.

Make a Splash! Tour
The USA Swimming Foundation is on a mission to teach every kid in America how to swim - particularly minority children - where the youth drowning rate is more than double the national average. Tomorrow, a community breakfast will be held at the Missouri Athletic Club-West here in St. Louis to launch this summer's tour. Olympic Gold Medalist Cullen Jones will be on-hand and the Make a Splash! program will be presented to community and business leaders. I'll be there too. You know I've never turned down anything but my collar. Tomorrow afternoon, Jones will visit the Mathews-Dickey Boys & Girls Club to introduce the program to a group of about 350 kids. He'll be giving a swim lesson or two as well. You know the big man will have pictures. So, stay tuned.

HBO Premiere
Yes, that HBO. The gold-standard of cable television descends upon the Gateway City for the HBO Sports documentary film - The Curious Case of Curt Flood at the Missouri History Museum beginning at 6 p.m. tomorrow night. Flood is widely regarded as the father of modern free-agency and HBO always does an outstanding job on its sports documentary films. You know what. Since you're all my friends, I'm inviting you and a guest to attend the premiere tomorrow night for a special, one night only price - FREE. That's right, you and about 300 of the Sports Commission's closest friends will be in attendance. You only need to RSVP. Call my good friend, Tim Ryan at 314-345-5101 or email him at tryan@stlsports.org. Space is limited so get to it. Tell Tim that Big Sol sent ya.

Coach It Right! Soccer Clinic
Make sure to check your inboxes for information on the 2011 Coach It Right! Soccer Clinic. The premiere youth soccer coaching clinic returns Tuesday, August 2. Details to come.

Free Friday
I don't know about you, but this Free Friday stuff gets me going. Serena Muhammad was last week's winner. She'll receive a $30 Quik Trip gift card in the mail this week for her outstanding definition of sportsmanship. Here's what she had to say. "Sportsmanship is maintaining the conduct and attitude of civility and respect towards teammates, opponents, spectators, officials, etc., win or lose. It is also about not "winning at all costs." Winning shouldn't come at the expense of someone else's dignity." I couldn't have said it better myself. Thanks, Serena. Now, I know some of you think you can do better. Well, your shot is comng this Free Friday. Let the brainstorming begin! Until next time...

Free Friday - Define 'Sportsmanship'

Posted on 06:00 by Unknown
The last couple of weeks we've given away Cardinals tickets. We certainly love our Redbirds, but we're going to be a little more practical this week. Here's the challenge. How do you define sportsmanship? It's that simple. Write your definition of sportsmanship in the comment box below this post. The person who submits the best definition gets a $30 Quik Trip gas card. For more than two years, you've read, watched, and listened to what I think. Now, it's your turn. Email subscribers, please don't respond by email. I'm going to need you to post a comment on the Sportsmanship blog site or it doesn't count. This post goes live at 8 a.m. CDT and ends at 5 p.m. So, you have nine hours to give it your best shot. Good luck. Until next time...

Oh Happy Day

Posted on 11:35 by Unknown
Olympic Day 2011 022 by TheRealBigSol
Olympic Day 2011 022, a photo by TheRealBigSol on Flickr.

Yesterday, the Sports Commission celebrated Olympic Day 2011 with the Disabled Athlete Sports Association (DASA). We participated in Track and Field, Archery, and Taekwondo. The formal stuff doesn't really matter. What really matters is the young man you see in the picture. His name is Happy. I'm not kidding. It really is Happy. When he was adopted, he asked the judge if he could change his name to Happy. The judge met him halfway and allowed Happy to be his middle name. As you can see, Happy was beside himself during Taekwondo.

Happy often needs help doing basic things. However,he found the extraordinary confidence and strength to put his fist through that board. That's the value of sports. Whether able-bodied or disabled, kids are repeatedly told what they can't do. But look at the result when we allow them to do what they CAN do. We have tons of pictures from Olympic Day that I'll post in the coming days, but I want you to focus on this picture of Happy. Is your coaching and/or parenting producing this result for your kids? Are you making them Happy? Until next time...

Love and Action in Vancouver

Posted on 07:41 by Unknown
It's taken awhile, but I've come to generally ignore stories about fan riots after championships. Why? Well, because you tend to run out of ways to explain why destroying your own city is dumb. The riots in Vancouver after the conclusion of last week's Stanley Cup Finals are a perfect example. I saw the footage, thought it was stupid, and moved on. But something else caught my eye. Amidst all the chaos and mayhem, there was a moment of sanity. A young couple was in the middle of the street - kissing.  You read that right. With police in riot gear, cars burning, and an angry mob charging - this couple found time to share a kiss. I know what you're thinking.  Maybe they enjoyed one too many adult beverages.  Quite the contrary, the young man actually kissed his girlfriend to protect her from the madness. He explains in the couple's Today Show interview below (email subscribers click here).

This video is also available on SportsmanshipTV.

Scott Jones provides a very good lesson in sportsmanship. While you can't kiss your way out of a bench-clearing brawl, you can take action that will calm the situation rather than exacerbate it. Jones' top priority was the safety of his girlfriend. Our top priority should be the safety of our kids. Fan behavior can and will get out of control. What you do when your fans get out of control is the difference between being part of the problem and being part of the solution. Until next time...

Vobora wins $5.4 million in PED lawsuit

Posted on 13:03 by Unknown
I always wondered what the fall-out would be if a case like this played out. St. Louis Rams linebacker David Vobora tested positive for a banned substance in 2009. He was suspended for four games without pay by the NFL, but the Rams chose to keep him on the roster. All the while, Vobora maintained his innocence. Let's stop right there. Don't they all maintain their innocence? You can count on one hand with several fingers missing the number of athletes who have admitted to taking banned substances when first caught. So, what makes Vobora different from almost everyone else? He actually sued the supplement company.

Vobora claims he took all of the necessary precautions before taking the suspicious supplement. The NFL has a supplement hotline for players. He called that. Vobora researched the company online and found nothing wrong. After doing his homework, Vobora added the supplement to his regimen. He tested positive for the banned substance methyltestosterone. The court ruled that the supplement company intentionally misrepresented the supplement. Vobora was awarded $5.4 million in lost wages and damages.

Obviously, performance-enhancing drugs have negatively affected sports at every level and should be dealt with accordingly. However, what happens when an athlete didn't do it? What if he really thought he was taking a legal supplement? Some pundits have said you're responsible for what you put into your own body. That's true - to an extent. There's nothing more an athlete like Vobora could've done short of taking the stuff to a lab himself. I know some old-school guys will say they don't need supplements anyway. I beg to differ. Proper training, nutrition, and supplementation are essential for professional athletes to maintain performance. Simply put - if Vobora stops using supplements, he won't be around long.

Now what does this mean for kids? This is by no means an endorsement for young athletes to take supplements. They should not! For kids, the lesson here is to not let anyone trample on your character. Performance-enhancing drugs carry the threat of suspension and other consequences, but there's also a stigma. Athletes who use performance-enhancing drugs are viewed as cheaters, liars, and people of suspect character. David Vobora refused to allow those labels to be placed on him. Even when falsely accused, he still played within the rules. He accepted his suspension, but then used the legal system to gain justice. Sometimes when we're wronged, we tend to break rules on an even larger scale than the ones we were accused of. Again, Vobora kept his cool and presented his case in a respectful, intelligent manner.

I'm proud of Vobora. He could have just come back to the Rams and kept quiet, but he didn't. His reputation and character were on the line. When dealing with performance-enhancing drugs, Vobora faced an uphill battle. Guilt is always assumed in cases like this. It's really hard to prove what you didn't do, but it was worth it in the end. Until next time...

Nobody hates Chris (Bosh)

Posted on 08:25 by Unknown
Did you notice that through all the venom and vitriol directed toward the Miami Heat and their NBA Finals loss to the Dallas Mavericks, that none was aimed Heat forward Chris Bosh?  Remember him?  He's the third member of Miami's Big Three.  He was on stage with LeBron James and Dwayne Wade when they made their over-the-top debut last summer.  You remember.  They promised to win five, six, maybe seven championships.  Making the NBA Finals would be a major accomplishment for most teams, but the Heat victimized themselves.  It truly was a championship or bust season.  There's no point in piling on LeBron right now.  Besides, everyone else is doing that for me.  I'd rather examine why everyone seems to hate LeBron James, but almost no one has a bad word to say about Chris Bosh.

LeBron James and Chris Bosh are essentially the same player. Both were "Mr. Basketball" in their respective home states of Ohio and Texas.  Both were drafted in 2003;  James at #1 and Bosh at #4.  Incidentally, Bosh was taken ahead of Dwayne Wade - who was drafted at #5 by the Heat.  James and Bosh meant everything to their former teams in Cleveland and Toronto respectively.  While James is Cleveland's all-time leading scorer, Bosh is Toronto's all-time leader in scoring, rebounds, and blocks.  Both men left their former teams in tough situations.  Cleveland won only 19 games and Toronto captured a mere 22 victories during the 2010-2011 season.  Again, why so much anger toward LeBron and not so much toward Bosh?

One word: attitude.  Bosh played hard all season, was a team player, and made the NBA All-Star Team for a sixth time in his eight seasons.  LeBron, however, couldn't get out of his own way.  The Decision television special and the events leading up to it made him a lightning rod for criticism.  When he took "his talents to South Beach," he also buried his reputation in the sand down there as well.  During the NBA Finals, LeBron and Wade decided to make fun of Dirk Nowitzki in front of a Dallas TV camera.  Bosh was conspicuously absent from the antics.  Even when LeBron took shots at the quality of his detractors' lives after the Finals loss, Bosh was nowhere to be seen.

I think somewhere in the midst of fake coughs and insults, Bosh distanced himself from his immature teammates.  Funny how three guys who are essentially the same age have vastly different levels of maturity.  This Heat team would lead you to believe that stardom and maturity have an inverse relationship.  Whatever the case, Bosh has found a way to be humble and accepting of his role on the team.  Bosh provides a good example for kids - especially when they have so-called rivalry games.  People can be hateful of your team colors, but can still respect you and your character.  By the way, some have made fun of Bosh for crying after the NBA Finals loss.  You'd cry too if you realized that you're trapped in basketball's version of The Hangover - and your character is "Stu."  Until next time...

Free Friday - Cardinals Field Box Tickets

Posted on 09:16 by Unknown
We kind of started this last week and I want to keep it going.  Free Friday continues.  It is baseball season and everybody loves the Cardinals.  So, today's prize is two field box tickets with passes to the Champions Club at Busch Stadium on a mutually agreeable date during the 2011 season.  My friend, Tray says a twice-enjoyed luxury becomes a necessity.  That's so true with the Champions Club at Busch Stadium.  Baseball is by far my favorite sport and I enjoy it that much more in the Champions Club.  Think of an air-conditioned space with a wall of HD screens.  Most of them have Cardinal baseball on.  But the last time I was there, the NBA playoffs were on too.  Oh, and did I mention the food and drink.  They have a full buffet and bar and I promise the food is first-class.

Now I don't want to give too much away.  The experience at Busch Stadium is priceless.  I did say this is Free Friday, but there is one condition.  You have to prove you're on the team for kids.  Click on the following link and commit to the principles of sportsmanship by signing the Sportsmanship Pledge.  We need at least 50 pledges signed to make this thing go.  A winner will be chosen at random and the drawing will be shown on SportsmanshipTV this afternoon at 5 p.m.  As long as you enter by 4:59 p.m. CDT, you're good.  Don't worry, nobody has to rush to the Sports Commission offices.  We'll contact you about the best way to pick up your prize.  Good luck!  Until next time...

Six-year-old gives stirring motivational speech

Posted on 07:49 by Unknown
I want every kid to have his or her moment in the sun.  Success for a kid is not only being able to accomplish something, but have the people they love most see them do it.  The video below shows a six-year-old who just learned to ride a bike and his words of his encouragement for other kids struggling to do the same.  His dad's the cameraman.  So, that just adds to the euphoria.  When someone says it's all about the kids, this is what they mean.  It's a perfect scenario.  A kid succeeds and wants to use his success to help others.  Watch the video, then order more free copies of our ground-breaking booklet - Through a Child's Eyes...A Parent's Guide to Improving Youth Sports.  Our kids need more moments like this (email subscribers click here).  Until next time...

Sportsmanship: First Class

Posted on 09:03 by Unknown
I know you're all out there, but sometimes it feels like I'm talking to myself.  You know, me and my laptop just pecking away - hoping and praying that someone is reading, watching, or listening.  If we could get one person to change his behavior, then maybe all of this effort won't go to waste.  Just when I start to feel like this, I get a signal...a sign if you will that I'm not alone.  Plenty of people care about youth sports and the effect they have on our young people and society as a whole.  I'll compare us to the X-Men, of comic book and movie fame.

For those who don't know the backstory, the X-Men are a team of superheroes with a variety of special powers.  Some are strong, some are fast, others have telepathic powers.  You get the picture.  Individually, they were called mutants or "freaks" and shunned from society.  However, when they joined forces, they became an unstoppable force for good - protecting the very people who once treated them as outcasts.  Those of us who write about sportsmanship, sports parenting, and the like can feel like outcasts.  We often ask ourselves, "Am I the only one who sees this stuff?"  No, we're not.  And that's why I'm writing today's post.

Ladies and gentlemen, I introduce to some and present to others, Ms. Aisha Sultan.  Aisha is the Home and Family Editor at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and writes the Parents Talk Back column for the paper.  After reading her latest column, Denial runs deep among sports parents, it's clear that she gets it and has a lot of valuable information for sports parents.  I encourage you to read it for yourself and join in the conversation.  We're both on Twitter for those who want to continue the dialogue.  I'm at www.twitter.com/TheRealBigSol.  Once you're there, Aisha's handle is @AishaS. Until next time...

Free Cardinals-Cubs Tickets for June 4

Posted on 11:44 by Unknown
Usually I have a poignant message, but this deal is pretty simple.  Because you're an avid reader of the Sportsmanship blog, (yes, I mean you) I have a special offer for you that kind of just fell into my lap.  The St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs renew their rivalry this weekend at the new Busch Stadium in downtown St. Louis.  I have 10 free tickets available to tomorrow afternoon's game courtesy of our friends at the Missouri Valley Conference.  However, I do have three rather painless conditions.  First, you must be able to pick up the tickets from the Sports Commission office today BEFORE 4:30 p.m.  Second, you must use any tickets you ask for.  Please don't let these go to waste.  Third, it doesn't matter where the seats are, they're free.  So, please accept the sections and rows we have available.  These tickets will go on a first-come, first-served basis.  You can claim them by emailing me - salexander@stlsports.org or call 314-345-5130.  Good luck!  Until next time...

Sportsmanship: Scholarship applications due June 15

Posted on 11:39 by Unknown
Now, I know you've never seen someone blog about his own blog, but this scholarship and its effect - the education of our young people is that important. There are so many deserving graduating seniors in the St. Louis area and I know you know one or more. If you haven't sent this information on to a graduate or his/her parents, then do it now. Yeah, yeah the deadline is in two weeks. So, what?!  Have your next action be the one that helps a young person. It's so important to me that I blogged about it twice in 10 minutes. The least you can do is click the share button. Until next time...

Scholarship applications due June 15

Posted on 11:30 by Unknown
In yesterday's post, I wrote about the shortcomings of the modern student-athlete and why education just isn't as important anymore.  While that may be true for some, the young people you see above use sports as a vehicle to achieve the best education possible.  From left to right we have Trent Ross, Megan Wood, and Jimmy Myers.  I can say from personal experience that these young people represent the very best in academics, athletics, and sportsmanship in the St. Louis area.  Each of them are past winners of the St. Louis Sports Commission's Sportsmanship Scholarship.  Review the information below and be sure to nominate a deserving St. Louis area graduating senior today.  Until next time...

ST. LOUIS SPORTS COMMISSION SEEKS NOMINATIONS FOR
$2,500 SPORTSMANSHIP SCHOLARSHIP

AWARD RECOGNIZES GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR FROM
ST. LOUIS REGION WHO EXEMPLIFIES OUTSTANDING SPORTSMANSHIP

APPLICATION AND NOMINATION FORM NOW AVAILABLE

ST. LOUIS – March 28, 2011 – The St. Louis Sports Commission is now accepting nominations for its annual Sportsmanship Scholarship. Unique to the region, the $2,500 scholarship is awarded to a graduating high school senior from the St. Louis metro area who demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship in athletic competition. The scholarship is part of the Sports Commission’s ongoing Sportsmanship Initiative and efforts to promote sportsmanship in the community.

The Sportsmanship Scholarship application and nomination form can be obtained online at http://www.stlsportsmanship.org/ or by calling 314-345-5130. Nominations must be received by June 15, 2011. The recipient will be selected by July 15 and recognized at the 2012 National Sportsmanship Awards in St. Louis.

Scholarship candidates should be nominated for exemplifying the ideals and values of sportsmanship: honesty, integrity, selflessness, kindness, compassion and class. While off-field activities and community service are applauded, scholarship candidates will be evaluated primarily for their approach and character in competition. Athletic performance (wins and other statistics) are not a factor. Those connected to athletic teams, such as student managers, can also be considered for the scholarship should their leadership and behavior represent an extraordinary standard and model for all in sports to follow.

The Sportsmanship Scholarship was created in 2009 by the St. Louis Sports Commission Associates – a group of area young professionals who volunteer to support the Sports Commission’s efforts. The Associates raise funds for the scholarship and select the recipient. Last year, they awarded $2,500 scholarships to Jimmy Myers, a graduate of Westminster Christian Academy, and Megan Wood, a graduate of Washington High School. Both were recognized for the character, class, humility and kindness they exhibited as high school student-athletes. Myers was a four-year letterman on the varsity tennis team at Westminster. Wood was a member of the cross country, basketball, soccer, and track and field teams at Washington High School. They will be honored at the 2011 National Sportsmanship Awards in St. Louis on April 30. For more information on the event, visit www.stlsports.org/awards.

The Sports Commission Associates will host their second annual Trivia Night on Aug. 29 to raise funds for the Sportsmanship Scholarship. Their inaugural Trivia Night last year raised more than $8,000 for the scholarship fund. More details on this year’s fundraiser will be announced in the coming weeks.

Terrelle Pryor and Greed

Posted on 11:23 by Unknown
Greed is a monster ; an all-consuming menace that eats and eats and eats. Greed is a bottomless pit with no allergies whatsoever. It will literally eat anything.  Greed will eat your career, education, marriage, friendships - even the very essence of your character.  Greed can sometimes be confused with need.  An eight ounce steak with mashed potatoes and a side of asparagus will satisfy my need for dinner.  However, eating five steaks for dinner is greedy.  I need a car to get to work everyday. I don't need eight.  That's greedy.  Greed has seemingly consumed many of our young people as well.  Whatever we give them is not enough.  It can't be a cell phone.  It has to be a smartphone - an iPhone - specifically the iPhone 4.  New shoes aren't good enough either.  They have to be the newest pair of Jordans.  You can't wear any of the clothes you buy your kids to the office, yet their clothes cost twice as much as yours.

The monster has also spilled over into sports.  Now a scholarship isn't good enough anymore.  Pay me money directly or give me several new cars and I'll think about allowing you to pay for my education.  This Ohio State and Terrelle Pryor situation is oozing greed.  Look, I'm not naive.  I know revenue-generating sports make tons of money and some people believe student-athletes should get more than a $40,000/yr. education out of the deal.  Well, that's a discussion for another time and place.  My only point regarding payment is that even if you paid some sort of stipend, some guys would still go above and beyond that.  You can't satisfy greed.

We value 4.4 more than 4.0.  A kid who runs a 4.4 in the 40-yard dash has greater value than the kid who earns a 4.0 in the classroom.  Don't fool yourself.  The kids know it, too.  That's why the scholarship isn't enough for them anymore.  Reportedly, Pryor received eight different cars during his three years at Ohio State.  I promise you the class valedictorian from Ohio State didn't receive one - not unless his or her parents bought it.  According to published reports, Pryor's license was suspended in February.  Why is that important?  Well, he drove a new car with temporary plates to a players-only meeting on Monday - the same day coach Jim Tressel resigned amid the current scandal involving cars, cash, and tattoos.  For more on the particulars of the Ohio State story, have a look at the ESPN report below (email subscribers click here).  The last time I checked, the dealer makes a copy of your license before handing over the keys to any vehicle.

What's the answer?  Well, I'm glad you asked.  It starts with us as parents and coaches.  While greed is a monster.  Greed can't feed itself.  Greed requires an enabler.  Your kid can't buy the iPhone 4.  He doesn't have a job or credit.  You do.  Pryor and other athletes can't come up with new cars at will.  Someone has to give them the keys.  We have to show our kids that earning what you get is the way.  Sports can provide an avenue for kids to earn a quality education.  Education should not be used as a means to play sports.  One more thing relative to cars and education - a car begins to lose its value the second you drive it off the lot.  An education gains in value every day beyond graduation.  Until next time...

Be a Good Sport!
